I am honored to be seeking re-election to the Winchester Board of Selectmen.
A lifelong Winchester resident and local businessman, I first became involved in town affairs when my children entered elementary school. I started as a Town Meeting member in order to learn about and participate in town issues. Since that time, through many years of volunteer service, I have been dedicated to improving the quality of life for the citizens of Winchester.
My years of involvement have given me the experience and knowledge to help address the challenges and opportunities that face our Town. For instance, my early service on the Finance Committee gave me a foundation of understanding of Winchester’s balance sheet and budget, and of the importance of supporting Winchester’s AAA bond rating — a rare designation among Massachusetts towns that supports our overall financial health. Through the Capital Planning Committee, I have become familiar with the Town’s assets and needs, helping to come up with innovative funding plans and also to support our school building plan. My years of addressing complicated issues — from finance to land use to government structure and more — have given me insight into the needs and challenges of our Town, but also into working hard and effectively with others to understand and resolve complicated matters. These experiences, together with my commitment to collegiality and to gathering facts and feedback on all issues, have helped to make me an effective Selectman.
I have been honored to serve on multiple Boards and Committees in town government:
- Board of Selectmen (18 years, including multiple times as Chair and Vice Chair)
- Finance Committee (6 years)
- Capital Planning Committee (9 years, and ongoing)
- Field Management Committee (13 years, and ongoing)
- EFPBC (3 years)
- Town Meeting (25 years, and ongoing)
- Numerous other standing and ad hoc committees, including Committee on Names, Cemetery Advisory Committee, Veteran Honor Roll Committee, Open Space and Recreation Committee, Audit Advisory Committee
In addition, I volunteer in other ways in the community. I particularly enjoy helping to organize and plan Winchester’s annual Town Day — a terrific event for the residents and businesses of our community.
